She Swims!

Yesterday dawned clear and the forecast called for a sunny day with light winds from the east northeast.

The boat, officially christened "Teazer," had her sea trials (perhaps lake trials would be more apt) yesterday and she performed beautifully.  I wish I could say the same for her skipper as he proved that he has much to learn about sailing a small boat.  However, here are a few pictures of Teazer afloat.

The first trial was to see if she could float and I could row.

She floated better than I rowed!

Just "beached" her after the first row.
The launching ramp, at Sonia's Aunt Polly's house, is at the end of a small cove on Logan Martin lake.  Yesterday, that little cove was down wind of the main body.  Thus we were on a classic "lee shore."  After struggling unsuccessfully to beat my way off that shore (sorry no pictures of that fiasco) I lowered the sail and rowed out into the lake to have room to maneuver.
The mast is stepped and I'm heading out to the deeper waters.
I'm hanging the rudder on its bracket.
The sail is going up.

The main sheet was belayed to the pin which if you have been reading this blog since the start of the boat building you will recognize as the first boat part that arrived.

Then lo and behold the wind filled the sail and we were off.

You might notice that I'm wearing my PFD just in case.
Yes, I'm wearing my Mary Day hat.
We even had a bit of a bow wake.
After a couple hours of solo sailing, practicing some tacks and experiencing some gibes Sonia got in with me and we enjoyed about an hour cruising around.
Soon the sun was getting low in the sky and we had to haul Teazer out onto her trailer and head back home.  All in all quite an experience.  I'm looking forward to our next sail.

From Brian:
I’m very impressed... Congratulations on a great job!

So, I’m thinking while you’re honing your sailing skills with Teazer, you may want to start working on your next project... and I happened upon something that just might “float your boat” [Oh!... Ouch!... sorry ‘boat that... Whoa, hey now, a bad pun in the apology for a bad pun is just going way too spar... ... ... Okay! Okay!... that was Pathetic!] (clearly I need help...).

Anyway, before I was so rudely interrupted by my own ramblings, I was trying to tell you about a website that might provide some inspiration for your next project at Kavalier 800

Seriously though... Great job on Teazer, you have plenty to be proud of...
